Opening Hours FAQ

Hours, holidays, and last admission

Is Pena Palace open on Mondays?
Yes — unusually for a major European monument, Pena is open every day of the week including Mondays, year-round. The only closures are December 25 and January 1.
What time is the last admission?
The last timed-entry slot for the palace interior is at 18:00 (6:00 PM), with the palace closing at 18:30. The park accepts last admission at 18:00 and closes at 19:00. The shuttle bus runs until 18:45.
What are the timed entry slots?
The palace interior is divided into 30-minute timed slots starting at 9:00 and running through 18:00. You must arrive within your slot — late arrivals beyond 15 minutes forfeit entry. Once inside, you can stay as long as you like up to closing.
When is the Chalet of the Countess of Edla open?
Daily 9:30 to 18:00 with last admission at 17:30. The chalet is included in the Park + Palace ticket and the park-only ticket. Allow 20–30 minutes for the visit and an extra 25-minute walk each way from the palace through the Valley of the Lakes.
What about Christmas and New Year's Day?
Closed all day on December 25 and January 1. Open with standard hours on December 24 and 31. Portuguese national holidays such as April 25 (Freedom Day) and June 10 (Portugal Day) keep normal hours. The palace also runs reduced 9:00–13:00 hours on Easter Sunday morning — confirm before booking.
Can I walk around the park without a timed slot?
Yes — the 200-hectare park, the terraces around the palace, the Triton Gate and the Chalet of the Countess of Edla are all accessible all day on a valid ticket. Only the palace interior requires a 30-minute timed slot.
How long can I stay inside the palace once I have entered?
As long as you like up to closing time. The 30-minute timed slot only governs when you can enter, not how long you can stay. Most visitors spend 45–60 minutes inside the State Rooms.
